Remaining Light
24 x 36 | acrylic on canvas
$3500
This landscape painting captures the precise, fleeting moment when the last warmth of day sets a Southern forest ablaze before surrendering to evening. Dean Gioia lines the composition with tall, slender pine and cypress trunks glowing amber and sienna along their sun-caught faces, their lean and sway giving the treeline an almost choreographed quality — a quiet procession caught mid-gesture.
The light source is just beyond the frame, raking across the scene horizontally and illuminating the tall dry grasses of the marsh bank in rich gold. Behind the trees, the canopy opens to a deep teal dusk sky — and there, small but perfectly placed, a crescent moon hangs above the treeline. It is one of those details that stops the eye: the day is genuinely ending, and night has already begun to assert itself.
A dark, still body of water occupies the lower third of the canvas, its surface absorbing the last of the ambient light and grounding the composition in quiet. A pale path curves gently along the water’s near edge, suggesting passage — someone was here, or could be — without introducing any figure to break the solitude.
Gioia handles the Spanish moss with characteristic restraint, letting it trail in pale wisps from the upper canopy without overwhelming the composition’s open, breathing quality. The overall palette moves from deep charcoal earth and water tones through warm amber and burnt orange, opening finally into that cool evening blue above — a full arc of transition from ground to sky, from day to night.
This is the Southern landscape at its most atmospheric: neither daytime nor dark, neither still nor moving, but suspended in the remaining light of a passing day.
Remaining Light is an original acrylic on canvas, 24×36 inches, and arrives framed and ready to hang.
