The Golden Hour
24 x 20 | acrylic on canvas
$2800
This Florida cypress swamp painting captures the ancient, brooding stillness of North Florida’s inland waterways at the day’s final light. Ancient bald cypress trees rise from black water, their flared bases and tangled knees anchoring them in the still surface below. Long curtains of Spanish moss hang from bare, reaching limbs, and the trees’ reflections dissolve into the dark water beneath them. Gioia’s palette runs deep — rich burnt sienna, raw umber, and near-black — punctuated by bright white impasto strokes that trace the exposed wood and give the composition its striking contrast.
North Florida’s Cypress Wilderness
Bald cypress forests like this one have defined Florida’s blackwater rivers and swamp systems for thousands of years. Stands this dense once blanketed the Apalachicola and Ochlockonee river basins, providing habitat for wood storks, barred owls, and river otters. Loggers cleared much of it in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and what survives today carries real historical weight. Gioia draws on that sense of depth and age in every brushstroke.
Original Acrylic on Canvas
Gioia works the canvas with layered, gestural strokes that build texture from the ground up. Light catches the raised paint on the cypress bark while the background recedes into shadow, creating the illusion of a forest stretching back without end. This Florida cypress swamp painting ships framed and ready to hang, measuring 24 x 20 inches.
