Security Light, Live Oak, Moon
20 x 24 | acrylic on canvas
$2800
This night painting is one of Dean Gioia’s most atmospheric and distinctly Southern works. A massive live oak dominates the vertical canvas, its forking trunk rising from a darkened ground into a canopy so dense with hanging Spanish moss that the tree becomes its own weather system — its own world. Two light sources compete quietly for the scene: a warm security lamp glowing from the left middle distance, and a amber full moon positioned in the upper right corner of a near-black sky.
Neither light overwhelms. Instead, they collaborate, each catching different surfaces of the moss and bark — the security light casting a yellowish warmth along the left side of the canopy, the moon lending a cooler, more diffuse glow to the upper reaches of the tree. Between them, the oak is illuminated in a way that feels genuinely nocturnal: partial, mysterious, and full of shadow.
Gioia works the moss with extraordinary patience. Long vertical trails of it hang from every branch, rendered in layered strokes of silver, pale green, and near-white that catch the dual light sources and shimmer. The cumulative effect is one of extraordinary texture — the canvas surface alive with the kind of mark-making that rewards close inspection as much as a view from across the room.
The ground plane is dark and spare, a path curving faintly at the lower left suggesting a place people pass through — a park, a campus, a historic neighborhood — without pulling the scene toward documentation. This could be any number of Florida towns where old oaks preside over the night with quiet authority.
Moody, technically accomplished, and rooted in a sense of place that is wholly Gioia’s own, this live oak moon night painting is a significant nocturnal landscape from one of Florida’s most compelling painters.
Security Light, Live Oak, Moon is an original acrylic on canvas, 24×20 inches, and arrives framed and ready to hang.
